Kathmandu — Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population has stated that the risk of Nipah virus infection in the country remains low, with no confirmed cases reported to date.
According to the ministry, the assessment aligns with evaluations by the World Health Organization, which indicate limited public health risk globally and within the South-East Asia region. However, recent cases reported in neighboring countries have prompted Nepal to strengthen precautionary measures.
The ministry said its Epidemiology and Disease Control Division has alerted health institutions across the country and finalized an interim testing algorithm to ensure early detection and response if needed.
Health officials explained that Nipah virus can spread through consumption of fruits contaminated by saliva, urine, or feces of infected fruit bats. Transmission may also occur through close contact with infected individuals or via animals such as pigs.
As a preventive step, the ministry has urged the public to thoroughly wash fruits, properly cook vegetables, drink only boiled or safe water, maintain cleanliness in animal shelters, and use protective gear while handling raw meat. Regular handwashing and mask use in crowded areas have also been advised.
Citizens experiencing symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pain, cough, breathing difficulty, nausea, or vomiting are requested to seek medical attention immediately. In severe cases involving loss of consciousness, the ministry has advised contacting the nearest health facility or dialing 1115.
While confirming that health facilities are on standby, the ministry has appealed to the public not to panic and to rely solely on official information, warning against rumors. Officials said monitoring is ongoing in coordination with national and international partners to ensure public safety.
