An alleged American national has been detained by Indian border forces in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district during an unauthorized attempt to cross into Nepal. The individual, who identified himself as 36-year-old Jordan Brown from California, was apprehended by the 22nd Battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) near border pillar number 516 in the Mainihwa area under the Sonauli police station jurisdiction. The arrest took place on Saturday during a routine border patrol when Brown attempted to flee after being signaled to stop.
According to Maharajganj Additional Superintendent of Police Siddharth, Brown was unable to produce a passport, visa, or any official identification papers at the time of his interception. During subsequent questioning, the suspect claimed to be a former US Navy officer. He reportedly told investigators that he had initially traveled to Thailand on a tourist visa, where he lost his passport. From Thailand, he allegedly traveled to Sri Lanka via a sea route, and subsequently entered India by sea on November 2, 2025.
This sequence of events indicates that the suspect had been residing in India illegally for nearly seven months without a passport, primarily staying in Goa. Prior to reaching the border, he traveled from Goa to Bengaluru, and then proceeded toward Sonauli with the intention of entering Nepal.
SSB Assistant Commandant Priya Yadav confirmed that security personnel recovered two mobile phones and Rs 31,460 in cash during a search of the suspect. Following initial interrogations by the SSB and multiple intelligence agencies, the individual was handed over to the Uttar Pradesh police in Sonauli for formal legal processing. A case has been registered at the Sonauli Police Station under Sections 21/23 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act. Law enforcement agencies are currently conducting verification procedures to authenticate the suspect's identity and his official claims.
