GENEVA — On June 26, 2026, the United Kashmir National Party (UKNP) organized a demonstration in front of the iconic Broken Chair monument outside the United Nations headquarters in Geneva. The main agenda of the program was to raise awareness regarding human rights issues in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Munir Mengal, a Baloch representative at the UN, attended the event to show solidarity with the Kashmiri people. During his address, Mengal highlighted the ongoing human rights violations faced by the Baloch population and strongly condemned the recent sentencing of activist Dr. Mahrang Baloch.

"We highly condemn Kangaroo court's misjudgment," Mengal said, referring to her conviction. "I appeal to the UN and its member states to intervene in this issue and give justice to her."

Background: The Dr. Mahrang Baloch Case

Dr. Mahrang Baloch is a globally recognized physician and leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC). She has gained international prominence for her peaceful advocacy against extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances in Balochistan, earning a place on the TIME100 Next and BBC's 100 Women lists.

On June 22, 2026, an Anti-Terrorism Court in Quetta sentenced her to life imprisonment. The state accused her of "provocative speech" that allegedly incited a crowd during a July 2024 protest, leading to the death of a security official. However, international rights organizations and her defense team have heavily condemned the verdict as politically motivated, pointing out that the trial was moved to a secretive, closed-door proceeding inside Hudda Jail, denying the public and journalists due transparency.
