In a major move to ensure passenger safety, the Kathmandu District Police Complex has detained 48 individuals accused of mistreating commuters. The arrests follow numerous reports of ticket counter staff using physical force and intimidation to coerce travelers into specific vehicles.
The incident came to light on April 1, 2026, during a targeted security operation across the capital. Authorities received specific intelligence that staff at various bus and Sumo counters were aggressively pulling passengers and subjecting them to indecent conduct to secure bookings for departures outside the valley.
According to a press release issued by SP Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, the police deployed multiple teams to identified hotspots. The largest group of detainees was picked up in Kalanki, where 24 individuals were taken into custody. Another 19 people were arrested from the Balkhu area by teams coordinated through the Kalimati Police Circle.
Additionally, the Gongabu New Bus Park Police Branch apprehended five individuals found engaging in similar disruptive behavior at the city's main transport hub. The authorities have confirmed that all 48 suspects are currently undergoing further investigation.
This police intervention highlights the ongoing challenges faced by travelers at major transit points in Kathmandu. The District Police Complex continues to monitor these areas to prevent further exploitation and ensure a dignified environment for all members of the public.
