India Builds Hope in the Hills: New School Handed Over to Remote Achham District in Nepal

In a significant gesture of development cooperation, the Government of India formally handed over a newly built school building to Shree Mahendra Secondary School in Sanfebagar Municipality, Achham District under its High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) initiative.
The handover ceremony was jointly officiated by Lalit Bahadur Kunwar, Chief of the District Coordination Committee (DCC) Achham; Rajendra Bahadur Kunwar, Mayor of Sanfebagar Municipality; and Suman Shekhar, First Secretary at the Embassy of India in Kathmandu. The event saw the presence of political representatives, government officials, social workers, school staff, students, and their parents.
Constructed at a total cost of NPR 32.4 million, the school building was funded through the Government of India’s grant under the ongoing Nepal–India Development Cooperation initiative. The building includes fully furnished classrooms, a science laboratory, computer lab, library, staff rooms, administration offices, separate toilets for boys and girls, and additional facilities such as computers and furniture.
Established in 1960, Shree Mahendra Secondary School now offers education from Nursery to Grade 12. It currently enrolls more than 400 students, with 65% being girls, marking an important step forward for girls’ education in the region.
Local authorities and community leaders praised India’s continued assistance to Nepal, highlighting how the new infrastructure will strengthen the overall learning environment and provide much-needed educational opportunities in this remote hilly region.
This school is one of 43 development projects supported by India in Sudurpashchim Province. Since 2003, India has undertaken over 573 HICDPs in Nepal, completing 495 of them to date. Furthermore, India has gifted 1009 ambulancesand 300 school buses to various hospitals and schools across Nepal, including 70 ambulances and 27 buses in Sudurpashchim alone. Six ambulances have specifically been provided to Achham District.
This project reflects the growing people-to-people ties between the two nations and underscores India’s long-term commitment to supporting Nepal’s educational and social infrastructure, especially in remote and underdeveloped areas.
