India Lays Foundation for Food Security Hub in Bajura—A New Chapter for Mountain Livelihoods?

Bajura — In the remote Himalayan village of Muktikot, nestled in the hills of Bajura, a new hope for food security and agricultural sustainability is rising. With financial support from the Government of India, a foundation stone was laid today for the construction of an Agriculture Promotion Centre for Food Grains Collection and Distribution.

The ceremony was jointly conducted by Mr. Bharat Bahadur Rokaya, Chairperson of Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality, and Shri Avinash Kumar Singh, Counsellor at the Embassy of India, Kathmandu. The event saw the participation of political representatives, government officials, social activists, and members of the local community.

Funded under the Nepal-India Development Cooperation program, the project is valued at NPR 31.41 million and is part of the High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDP). The centre will feature facilities including a food distribution desk, record room, and proper grain storage units—tailored to the unique challenges faced by mountainous regions like Bajura.

Local stakeholders expressed gratitude for India’s consistent developmental support and voiced optimism that the new infrastructure would not only help collect and preserve local agricultural produce but also safeguard the region’s food needs during difficult seasons.

Since 2003, India has undertaken over 573 HICDPs across Nepal, with 495 already completed. Of these, 43 are in Sudurpashchim Province, including 2 in Bajura. Additionally, India has gifted over 1,009 ambulances and 300 school buses nationwide—three ambulances and one school bus in Bajura alone.

In regions where roads are scarce and market access is often a dream, such initiatives represent more than infrastructure—they are lifelines. This new centre promises not only grain storage but also a chance for this region’s farmers to finally harvest dignity along with crops.
