In a significant move to enhance the travel experience in Nepal’s tourism capital, Pokhara has introduced a free electric shuttle bus service connecting the Pokhara International Airport to Amarsingh Chowk. Launched on the occasion of the Nepali New Year 2083, this initiative directly addresses long-standing complaints regarding expensive taxi fares for short distances.

The service, formally inaugurated by Pokhara Metropolitan City Mayor Dhanraj Acharya, is a collaborative effort between the metropolis, Mahanagar Yatayat Pvt. Ltd., Agriculture Development Bank, and Kamana Sewa Bikas Bank. As a pilot project, the service will remain free of charge until mid-July 2026, after which it will transition to a permanent model with minimal fees.

Operating daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, two 32-seater electric buses have been deployed to ensure continuous connectivity. These vehicles are specifically designed for travelers, offering comfortable seating and dedicated luggage space. The goal is to drop passengers at major city hubs, from where they can easily access various local destinations at a lower cost.

With Pokhara International Airport handling approximately 5,000 passengers daily, the demand for reliable and affordable transit has never been higher. Mayor Acharya emphasized that this move is a strategic step toward making Pokhara a more tourist-friendly city while promoting green energy through electric vehicles.

This pilot phase will serve as a foundation for a long-term urban mobility plan, potentially expanding based on passenger feedback and regional needs.
