The Government of Nepal has initiated a rigorous crackdown on the politicization of its administrative workforce, issuing a formal ultimatum to civil servants regarding their neutrality. According to a notice released by the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration on Wednesday, government employees are strictly prohibited from holding memberships in political parties or their affiliated wings.
The Ministry has explicitly warned that any staff member found engaging in active politics or contesting elections will face immediate removal from their positions. This disciplinary action carries severe consequences, as violators may be declared ineligible for any future government service. This move seeks to reinforce the legal framework established under the Civil Service Act, 1992, specifically Section 61(1)(e), which mandates the termination of employees who participate in political activities.
The directive underscores the necessity of a professional and accountable bureaucracy. Section Officer Bibek Bidari emphasized that the measure is vital for upholding the credibility and impartiality of the civil service. By demanding strict adherence to ethical conduct, the Ministry aims to decouple public administration from partisan influence, ensuring that the state machinery remains responsive to the public rather than political interests.
