Concerns over judicial independence have resurfaced as Nepal Bar Association President Prof. Dr. Vijay Prasad Mishra warned of recurring patterns of pressure on the judiciary during periods of strong political dominance.

Addressing a national conference of women legal professionals in Bhaktapur, Mishra emphasized that past instances show how two-thirds majority governments have often targeted the judiciary, raising questions about constitutional safeguards.

He cited historical examples where judicial appointments and processes were influenced or disrupted, noting that such actions have previously weakened institutional credibility. According to him, even recent political developments reflect similar risks to judicial autonomy.

Mishra stated that while the Bar Association is prepared to extend initial trust to a new government, it would take a firm position if constitutional principles are undermined. He stressed that safeguarding rule of law remains a core responsibility of legal professionals.

Reflecting on past struggles, he recalled that the Bar had endured attacks, including damage to law firms and its own infrastructure, yet continued its role in defending judicial integrity.

He urged lawyers and judges alike to remain alert, suggesting that the current phase demands heightened vigilance to ensure that the judiciary remains protected from undue influence.
