Rabi Lamichhane Arrest: Supporters' Street Drama Despite Special Privileges, Why the Uproar?
After the arrest of Rabi Lamichhane, a former U.S. citizen, ex-Deputy Prime Minister of Nepal, and President of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, his supporters have taken to the streets to create chaos. Lamichhane was arrested in connection with a cooperative fraud investigation. However, his supporters, acting as if they are above the law, have been chanting slogans against the police and the government.
Lamichhane claims he is innocent and accuses the ruling party of protecting the real culprits of the cooperative fraud. His supporters have taken this accusation to heart, obstructing legal proceedings and taking to the streets. Blocking roads and holding protests during his transfer to Pokhara is unacceptable in a country governed by the rule of law. This behavior is not a political struggle for change, but an attempt to shield an individual from justice.
The police took Lamichhane into custody in Pokhara at 3 AM for investigation. Despite being arrested under a court order, his supporters continue to chant slogans and stir unrest. At a time when patience is needed during the investigation, they are creating unnecessary drama under the guise of a movement.
Moreover, the Kaski police have made special arrangements for Lamichhane. He has not been treated like an ordinary detainee. He has been provided with clean, warm bedding, a separate accommodation, and good food. For high-profile individuals like him, police custody is far from uncomfortable. Even in detention, he enjoys certain privileges. So, why are his supporters causing such an uproar?
Lamichhane’s arrest is a legal process. Attempts to influence the investigation will only intensify the seriousness of the charges against him. Yet, instead of respecting the law and patiently awaiting the investigation's outcome, his supporters are performing a street drama. This is a legal matter that will be resolved through judicial proceedings. Everyone should remain patient and wait for the investigation results because the law should be equal for all.
Supporters must understand that Lamichhane is not an ordinary detainee. He has been treated with respect in custody, and there has been no inhumane treatment. Therefore, there is no need for panic. It is unnecessary to stage performances across the country. Everyone should stay calm and allow the investigation to proceed independently.
Defending Lamichhane by violating the law only shows a lack of faith in the justice system. Let’s not interfere with the investigation, and instead, cultivate respect for the law among all citizens.
