The newly formed administration under Prime Minister Balendra Shah has encountered immediate and fierce opposition from 23 sister organizations affiliated with the CPN-UML. The discord stems from the Cabinet's inaugural decision to implement the findings of the Gauri Bahadur Karki-led probe commission. In a collective display of defiance, these organizations have categorized the government's move as a targeted act of political retribution rather than a pursuit of justice, warning of severe national consequences if the decision is not rescinded.
In a joint press statement, the leadership of these organizationsтАФincluding the National Youth Federation, Press Chautari Nepal, ANNFSU, and GEFONTтАФlabeled the Karki Commission's report as biased and provocative. They argue that the document was drafted with the specific intent of character assassination against established political leadership while ignoring alleged instances of infiltration and vandalism during the protests of September 7 and 8 (Bhadra 23 and 24). By challenging the validity of the commission itself, the groups claim the government is institutionalizing a "politics of hatred" that undermines fundamental legal principles.
The ultimatum issued to the Balen Shah government suggests that any attempts to detain or harass opposition figures based on this report will trigger a massive wave of resistance. The organizations have formally demanded the dissolution of the "prejudiced" Karki Commission and the cancellation of Friday's Cabinet directive. As prominent figures like Maharaj Gurung, Ganesh Pandey, Deepak Dhami, and Binod Shrestha spearhead this opposition, the political climate appears set for an early confrontation between the new executive and the primary opposition's grassroots machinery.
