KATHMANDU. The US government has issued a new travel advisory for its citizens living in or wishing to visit Nepal. The US maintains that protest demonstrations in Nepal could turn violent at any time and without any prior notice.
The US State Department and Embassy have placed Nepal on the list of countries requiring extra caution. Although the situation appears normal on the surface, a warning has been highlighted that small and large rallies in cities could suddenly turn into clashes and unrest.
This warning that demonstrations could turn violent at any time carries serious significance in Nepali politics. This shows that the international community does not yet consider Nepal's political situation to be fully stable.
Even though it looks calm outside, dissatisfaction among the public persists, conveying the message that this anger could spill onto the streets at any time. Furthermore, the outside world remains skeptical about how capable the state machinery is of preventing sudden outbreaks of violence and maintaining law and order. As a result, this has heightened fears among ordinary Nepalis about whether a new political upheaval or crisis is looming.

In addition, citing severe risks from floods and landslides, Americans have been advised not to travel to the Rasuwagadhi, Timure, and Syabrubesi areas of Rasuwa. This decision was taken as roads and communications in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridor areas have been completely disrupted.
On the other hand, however, dozens of Nepali youth and volunteers are reaching those remote areas daily, risking their own lives to distribute relief material to flood victims. The risk of natural disasters is equally dangerous for Nepalis as it is for foreigners.
Foreign missions create such strict rules for their citizens considering the technical complexities of insurance, emergency air rescue, and diplomatic assistance. For Nepalis, helping brothers and sisters in distress becomes a humanitarian and social duty. Although the US warning does not state that a major immediate turmoil will occur in the country, it makes clear that Nepal's political and security situation remains at a very sensitive juncture.
