A tragic mystery has unfolded in Mumbai’s Pydhonie area, where a family of four lost their lives within hours of consuming watermelon. Medical experts investigating the case at Sir JJ Hospital have noted that the progression of the illness was far more aggressive than typical food poisoning, pointing toward a possible chemical or toxic exposure.
The deceased have been identified as 44-year-old Abdullah Dokadia, his wife Nasreen, and their two daughters, Ayesha and Zainab. On the night of the incident, the family had shared a biryani dinner with relatives before consuming watermelon separately. While the guests who only ate the meal remained healthy, all four family members who ate the fruit began experiencing violent symptoms by early morning.
According to Dr. Sanjay Surase, Medical Superintendent of Sir JJ Hospital, the victims suffered a rapid neurological decline and loss of consciousness. He stated that the severity and speed of their deterioration are inconsistent with routine foodborne illnesses, suggesting the involvement of a potent external agent.
The timeline of the tragedy was devastatingly swift. After initial vomiting and semi-consciousness, the family members were rushed to the hospital. Nasreen passed away just over two hours after admission, followed by her daughters and eventually Abdullah, who succumbed late Sunday night.
Local authorities and forensic teams have collected samples of the leftover food and the watermelon for detailed analysis at the Kalina forensic laboratory. While the community remains in shock, investigators are awaiting histopathology and toxicological reports to determine if pesticides or other dangerous additives played a role in this sudden devastation.
