The educational infrastructure in earthquake-impacted regions of Nepal is set for a major upgrade following a new bilateral agreement. The Central Project Implementation Unit (Education) under the Ministry of Education and Sports has officially penned contracts with construction firms to rebuild fourteen schools. Spread across eight severely hit districts—including Gorkha, Nuwakot, Dhading, Dolakha, Kathmandu, Kavrepalanchowk, Ramechhap, and Sindhupalchok—this initiative marks a critical step forward in reviving local learning communities.
Financed through a generous grant of NPR 56.02 crore from the Government of India, the project falls under the post-earthquake reconstruction assistance framework. The formal signing ceremony witnessed the participation of key stakeholders, including the Counsellor of the Development Partnership and Reconstruction Division from the Embassy of India, the Project Director of the Central Project Implementation Unit, alongside various institutional officials and construction representatives.
Safety and modern amenities lie at the heart of this new development phase. All fourteen institutions will be built strictly in accordance with the seismic-resistant building codes mandated by the Government of Nepal. Beyond sturdy structural frameworks, the upgraded facilities will feature fully furnished classrooms, dedicated academic blocks, and segregated sanitation facilities tailored specifically for male and female students.
This venture expands upon a substantial foundation of prior bilateral achievements in the educational sector. Previously, India's post-earthquake rehabilitation scheme successfully delivered seventy reconstructed schools and the Tribhuvan University Central Library across eight districts, all of which were officially handed over to the Nepali authorities in January 2024.
This ongoing academic expansion underscores a deep-seated administrative alliance. The Indian government has reaffirmed its long-term dedication to working alongside Nepal's leadership to foster sustainable socio-economic growth and complete vital community rehabilitation projects.
