Harka Raj Rai, Chairman of the Shram Sanskriti Party, has formally announced his party's intention to serve as a vigilant and constructive opposition within the newly formed parliament. Speaking to journalists at Singha Durbar on Thursday following his swearing-in ceremony, Rai articulated a strategy of "support through questioning," suggesting that rigorous oversight is essential for effective governance.
The Shram Sanskriti Party leader believes that healthy criticism acts as a corrective mechanism, ensuring the government remains aligned with national interests. Rai noted that his party views the role of the opposition not merely as a barrier, but as a guide to keep the administration on the "right track." He emphasized that while the ruling coalition possesses the simple majority required for standard legislation, his party's cooperation would be strategic rather than automatic.
Regarding potential constitutional changes, Rai indicated a willingness to assist the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) or the governing alliance in achieving a two-third majority, provided their proposals prioritize the welfare of the citizens and the nation. The decision to support such amendments will be made on a case-by-case basis after a thorough review of the specific objectives presented.
According to Rai, the recent electoral mandate clearly designates his party for an opposition role, tasked with holding the executive accountable. He concluded by stressing the importance of utilizing the upcoming five-year term efficiently to deliver tangible results for the public, signaling a shift toward a more proactive and interventionist parliamentary culture.
