The Communist Party of Nepal has questioned the conduct of the Speaker regarding the protest style of opposition parties in the House of Representatives. The opposition parties have been consistently demanding a response from Prime Minister Balen Shah concerning his controversial statements on border issues. During the session, the Speaker requested the opposition lawmakers to modify their method of protest while seeking answers from the Prime Minister.
In response to this guidance, Communist Party of Nepal Member of Parliament Pramesh Kumar Hamal raised an objection to the Speaker's stance. According to the lawmaker, the Speaker should have directed the Prime Minister to clarify the situation rather than asking the opposition to alter their form of agitation. The opposition parties have maintained that the Speaker should issue a formal ruling ensuring that the Prime Minister provides an official explanation.
Lawmaker Hamal stated that the opposition would continue their protests until the Prime Minister delivers a clear response regarding the issue of nationality. The controversy stems from an earlier address on June 3, when Prime Minister Balen remarked during a parliamentary session that he discovered after taking office that India has not only encroached Nepal's land but Nepal has also encroached India's land in many places. Following this statement, opposition parties have persistently demanded either factual evidence to back the claim or a formal apology.
According to parliamentary regulations, the concerned minister is required to respond to questions raised in parliament within seven days. Furthermore, the rules dictate that a direct question-and-answer session with the Prime Minister should be conducted during the first week of every month, which has reportedly not taken place. The situation underscores the growing tension between the executive and legislative oversight mechanisms as the house navigates compliance with parliamentary protocols.
