Dr. Neelmani’s Threat to the Editor Goes Viral: “Fix the News or Face Trouble”

Kathmandu – Following the recent publication of an investigative story regarding alleged corruption, discrimination, and student abuse at Jorpati-based Nepal Medical College (NMC), Medical Director Dr. Neelmani Upadhyay has issued a pointed response that many readers and media observers are now interpreting as a direct threat.

In his message addressed to the chief editor, Dr. Upadhyay wrote:

“Please correct the news, otherwise it will land in trouble.”
He also stated that he is not involved in any financial affairs at NMC, and that student-related matters fall under the principal’s responsibility. He asserted that his role is limited to managing hospital operations.

The phrase “it will land in trouble” has raised serious concerns within journalistic circles. Several senior journalists and press rights advocates have interpreted it as an indirect attempt to intimidate the media. “This type of language is inappropriate and unbecoming of someone holding a public post in a medical academic institution,” said a media law expert on condition of anonymity.

Human rights activists have also expressed alarm. “A doctor threatening the press instead of offering transparency is deeply disturbing. The right to question authority lies at the heart of democracy,” one activist stated.

The editorial team stands by its story, which was based on verified testimonies from medical students, staff, and internal sources. As per journalistic ethics, Nepal Medical College has been offered space to publish its official response or clarification. However, such responses must avoid threatening language that undermines the freedom of expression and intimidates investigative journalism.
