Dr. Michael Koch Takes Charge at German Embassy, Highlights Civil Peace Efforts

Germany has welcomed a new face in its diplomatic mission to Nepal, with Dr. Michael Koch officially assuming the role of Chargé d’Affaires ad interim (acting Ambassador) at the German Embassy in Kathmandu. The announcement was made via the embassy’s official social media channels, where Dr. Koch was warmly introduced to the public.

In one of his first public engagements, Dr. Koch participated in a major cross-agency meeting of the Civil Peace Service (CPS) program in Nepal, a long-standing initiative supported by the German government. During his address, Dr. Koch described the CPS as a "cornerstone of the Nepali-German civil society cooperation" and emphasized Germany’s continued dedication to supporting Nepal’s journey toward sustainable peace, reconciliation, and inclusive development.

The Civil Peace Service program is a collaborative initiative involving four German organizations — KURVE Wustrow, Brot für die Welt, GIZ Nepal, and Peace Brigades International (PBI) — working alongside 22 local Nepali NGOs. It plays a key role in areas such as transitional justice, reconciliation, women’s participation in peacebuilding, and community empowerment.

Dr. Koch was also ceremonially welcomed with a traditional Nepali topi, symbolizing mutual respect and friendship between the two nations.

His arrival comes at a time when Nepal continues to grapple with complex post-conflict challenges. Germany’s development cooperation, particularly through the Civil Peace Service, remains a vital pillar in helping the country address these issues.

Dr. Koch is expected to continue nurturing the robust relationship between Nepal and Germany, further deepening diplomatic, cultural, and development ties.
