Kathmandu  – In a significant boost to Nepal's public health efforts, the first consignment of vaccines aimed at supporting patients with Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) was handed over by the Indian government today.

At a ceremony held in Kathmandu, the Ambassador of India to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, presented the vaccines to Nepal's Honourable Minister of Health and Population, Pradip Poudel. This handover marks the initial phase of a larger USD 2 million aid package from India, responding to a request from the Government of Nepal for assistance in managing these hereditary blood disorders.

This essential contribution is expected to significantly bolster Nepal's initiatives in addressing Thalassemia and SCD, conditions that present considerable health challenges, particularly noted within communities such as the Tharu.

The first tranche delivered today includes vital vaccines intended to prevent serious secondary infections in these vulnerable patient groups:

  1. Influenza vaccine (3100 units)
  2. Salmonella vaccine (1550 units)
  3. Meningococcus vaccine (3100 units)
  4. Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine (4640 units)
  5. Streptococcus pneumoniae (Pneumococcal) vaccine (4640 units)

Speaking at the handover event, Ambassador Srivastava emphasized the critical role these vaccines will play in enhancing the quality of life for individuals affected by Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease in Nepal. He highlighted the deep-rooted friendship between India and Nepal and reiterated India's commitment to cooperation in areas of mutual interest, aligning with India's 'Neighborhood First' policy.

Receiving the aid on behalf of the Nepalese government, Health Minister Pradip Poudel expressed profound gratitude for India's generous support. He underscored the positive impact the vaccines will have on public health and acknowledged the long-standing partnership with India and its valuable contributions to Nepal's healthcare system over the years.

This initiative serves as a testament to the close bilateral relationship and collaborative spirit between India and Nepal, reflecting their shared vision for a healthier future for their citizens. The Government of India affirmed its ongoing commitment to partnering with Nepal across various sectors, including health, to promote mutual progress and development.
