Frequent Attacks on Chinese Nationals Put CPEC Projects at Risk as China Issues Stern Warning for Enhanced Security
The growing frequency of violent attacks on Chinese nationals working in Pakistan has intensified tensions between China and Pakistan. Following a recent shooting incident at a textile factory in Karachi on November 5, where two Chinese nationals were injured, China has issued a stern warning to Pakistan to strengthen the security measures for its citizens. China is now pressuring Pakistan to establish a ‘joint security mechanism’ to ensure the safety of Chinese workers.
The security issues facing Chinese nationals threaten the progress of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), as China grows increasingly concerned about the protection of its workers. Recent incidents, including suicide bombings and targeted attacks, have led Beijing to demand stronger security commitments from Pakistan, warning that the lack of safety could hinder CPEC and Chinese investments in Pakistan.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his concerns regarding the incident, stating that he is personally overseeing the efforts to bring those responsible to justice. However, Pakistan has shown reluctance to formally deploy Chinese security personnel within its borders due to domestic concerns and growing local resistance. This reluctance, coupled with the increase in violent incidents, risks creating further strain on the bilateral relationship and puts CPEC projects at greater risk.
