Rising concerns over regional stability have resurfaced after Russia cautioned Japan against continuing its path toward military expansion, warning that such steps could heighten tensions across the Asia-Pacific.
According to statements from the Russian Foreign Ministry, spokesperson Maria Zakharova stressed that Japan must draw lessons from its past and adhere to the pacifist principles embedded in its constitution. Her remarks came during a regular press briefing where she pointed to Tokyo’s recent actions, including the procurement of cruise missiles, as indicators of a shift toward offensive military capabilities.
Zakharova argued that these weapons cannot be categorized as purely defensive systems, raising alarms in Moscow and among neighboring countries. She emphasized that the increasing scale of Japan’s military spending, particularly on advanced weaponry, carries potentially damaging consequences for regional security.
Russia has repeatedly conveyed its concerns to Japan, warning that such developments could undermine both regional and global stability. The growing militarization, Moscow claims, risks escalating tensions and could trigger a new phase of arms competition in the Asia-Pacific.
The Russian side also indicated that any emergence of missile-related threats targeting its territory would prompt a response. Zakharova noted that Russia would take all necessary measures to safeguard its national defense if such risks materialize, underscoring the seriousness of the situation moving forward.
