LALITPUR — Nepali Congress General Secretary Uday Shumsher Rana has warned that the party will not remain silent if the government takes political revenge and attempts to arrest party President Gagan Kumar Thapa.
Speaking at a sanitation and flower plantation program organized by Nepali Congress Constituency No. 1 Lalitpur at Bajrabarahi, Rana accused the government of acting against democratic values, the rule of law, and citizen rights.
"If the government takes any wrong step against President Gagan Kumar Thapa, Congress will not sit and watch as a silent spectator," Rana said. "We will firmly resist such a move."
Rana claimed that the government is attempting to arrest President Thapa based on the statement of middleman Inam Sapkota. Warning of strong resistance against any retaliatory action against Thapa, he called on party leaders and workers to remain united.
Allegation of IGP Removal Over Refusal of Illegal Arrests
General Secretary Rana alleged that the government pressured Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki to carry out illegal arrests. He claimed that the government sought to bypass legal procedures to target disliked individuals, political leaders, businessmen, and employees using the police leadership.
Rana alleged that the government removed IGP Karki from his position after he refused to make illegal arrests. He stated that attempting to use security agencies for political interests poses a serious threat to the democratic system and the rule of law.
Rana noted that government activities have become increasingly controversial since Balendra Shah of the Rastriya Swatantra Party became Prime Minister. Accusing the government of widespread crackdowns on businessmen, political leaders, and employees, he stressed the need to stop the misuse of state power.
Furthermore, Rana accused the government of increasing pressure and interference in the media sector. Condemning a recent incident where police were sent to a media house to arrest journalists, he emphasized the need to protect press and freedom of expression.
He also alleged that the government is trying to influence the judiciary through its close allies, warning that attempting to control major state organs presents a grave challenge to democracy. Accusing the Prime Minister of trying to enforce authoritarian tendencies, Rana said a situation has arisen where all conscious citizens must take to the streets in protest, calling on all political forces and citizens supporting democracy, rule of law, and civil rights to unite.
