Nepali Prime Minister Schedules Official Visit to China
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has scheduled an official visit to China, set to take place from November 30 to December 3. This high-profile visit is expected to focus on several critical issues, including reopening trade routes at Kimathanka, Korala, and Hilsa border points, which are crucial for cross-border trade and regional connectivity. Additionally, the visit aims to advance the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project signed in 2017 but delayed in implementation. Another key agenda item is the long-awaited Sigatse-Kerung-Kathmandu railway project, which is set to strengthen Nepal’s rail connectivity with China. Accelerating this project would provide Nepal with a more efficient trade route, offering a direct link to China’s extensive rail network.
Prime Minister Oli’s political advisor, Bishnu Rimal, indicated that the talks will also include discussions around the loan relief for Pokhara Airport, a significant infrastructural development in Nepal’s tourism sector. The loan waiver is expected to relieve some financial burdens on Nepal, fostering better bilateral ties.
Interestingly, this visit comes amid speculations about a potential visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nepal, following an informal conversation last month in New York. However, despite the talk of strengthening ties, Nepal has yet to receive a formal invitation from India for Oli’s reciprocal visit to Delhi. Opting for Beijing over Delhi, Prime Minister Oli’s visit marks a diplomatic pivot towards China, indicating a shift in Nepal’s engagement strategy within the region.
This visit is seen as a new step toward reinforcing Nepal-China relations while addressing Nepal’s infrastructural ambitions and trade facilitation goals.
