The Embassy of India in Kathmandu celebrated the 80th Independence Day of India on 15 August 2026, with enthusiastic participation from members of the Indian community, friends of India in Nepal, embassy officials, and their families.
The commemorative event commenced with the singing of 'Vande Mataram', followed by the hoisting of the national flag by the Ambassador of India to Nepal and the singing of the National Anthem. Attendees also watched the broadcast of the address to the nation delivered by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, on the eve of the historic occasion.
During the event, the Ambassador honored the widows and next of kin of 11 deceased personnel of the Indian Armed Forces, handing over Army Group Insurance Funds (AGIF) cheques totaling NPR 8.2 Crores.

In addition, the Ambassador felicitated the winners of various competitions organized by the Embassy for the occasion. The honored participants included winners of a painting competition themed 'Viksit Bharat', the Viksit Bharat Run, an Inter-School Quiz Competition, and a special edition of the Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz.
Demonstrating a commitment to enhancing access to educational resources, the Embassy also announced a book grant for 22 educational institutions and libraries spread across all seven provinces of Nepal.
The celebration concluded with patriotic songs and vibrant cultural performances presented by teachers and students from the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center of the Embassy, reflecting the ongoing cultural exchanges and bilateral goodwill between the two neighboring nations.
