Secret Talks: Why India’s Top Diplomat Met with Opposition Leader Prachanda!
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held a significant meeting with Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' at Prachanda’s residence in Khumaltar. Despite the Maoist party currently being in opposition, this meeting is being viewed as highly important.
According to Prachanda’s secretariat, the discussion centered on strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing mutual cooperation between the two nations. Misri’s visit comes at a crucial time, as India looks to solidify its relationship with Nepal across political lines.
Although Maoists are not in power, their government, during their tenure, had been committed to implementing China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects. This meeting suggests India’s strategic interest in maintaining strong relations with the Maoists, potentially to counterbalance China’s growing influence in the region.
Foreign Secretary Misri, known as an expert on China, is likely to have delved deep into discussions regarding Nepal-China relations, the BRI project, and the broader geopolitical landscape. Misri’s two-day visit to Nepal began this morning, during which he has already met with President Ram Chandra Poudel and Prime Minister KP Oli.
