Tibetans in Nepal Celebrate 90th Birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

Kathmandu — Tibetans residing in Nepal gathered at the Samdupling Tibetan Settlement in Jawalakhel, Kathmandu’s outskirts, to commemorate the 90th birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. The event saw participation from a wide spectrum of dignitaries, officials, and community members, highlighting the deep cultural and spiritual ties of the Tibetan diaspora in Nepal.

Chuwar Kyabje Kuntse Rinpoche graced the ceremony as the chief guest, accompanied by special guests including Representative Tsepri Lopan Tulku Ngawang Chokdup, former Tibetan Justice Commissioner Ngawang Thupten, and ambassadors and diplomats from Nepal-based embassies representing countries across America, Europe, and Asia.

Officials from the Government of Nepal, Himalayan Buddhist community members, representatives from Tibetan settlements, local Tibetan assemblies, regional Tibetan freedom movements, monastic communities, local Tibetan schools, and various Tibetan civil society organizations also participated. The total attendance surpassed 1,000 individuals.

The ceremony was vibrant with traditional cultural performances: the Nepal Tibetan Women’s Association performed traditional dances and songs; the Nepal Trehor Welfare Society presented yak and snow lion dances; and local participants of all ages—children, youth, and elders—joined in song, creating a colorful, joyous atmosphere.

As part of the event, Representative Tsepri Lopan Tulku Ngawang Chokdup presented copies of His Holiness’s autobiography, Voice for the Voiceless, to foreign dignitaries. Bilingual documents (English-Tibetan) concerning the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation, distributed at the recently concluded 15th Tibetan Religious Conference, were also shared.

This celebration reflects the enduring cultural heritage and spiritual solidarity of Tibetans in Nepal, underscoring their commitment to preserving their identity amid ongoing challenges.
