Why India Is Spending Big on Nepal’s Cricketers—The Truth Behind the Hype!
Cricket Diplomacy: Is India's Bold Play Transforming Nepal’s Sporting Future Forever?

In a rapidly shifting South Asian geopolitical landscape, cricket is no longer just a beloved pastime—it's become an influential diplomatic tool reshaping ties between India and Nepal. Over recent years, India has strategically elevated cricket cooperation, significantly enhancing Nepal’s cricket infrastructure, fostering talent, and opening a gateway for young Nepali cricketers to dream bigger than ever before.
Underpinning this dynamic relationship is a clear commitment from the Indian government and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Since early 2023, a series of coordinated initiatives have unfolded, seamlessly blending sport with diplomacy. Most recently, in preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers scheduled in Oman this October, Nepal's national cricket team received specialized training at BCCI’s state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru from July 21 to August 3, 2025. Such high-caliber international exposure underscores a profound commitment—one that transcends mere goodwill gestures and demonstrates genuine investment in Nepal's cricketing potential.
But India's cricket diplomacy didn't begin overnight. Back in January 2024, India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar personally met representatives from the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) and Nepal’s national team, affirming India’s dedication to supporting Nepalese cricket at every step. Since then, India’s cricket fraternity has consistently backed its promises. In August 2024, ahead of Nepal's crucial appearance at the ICC T20 World Cup, Bengaluru hosted intensive training sessions to hone Nepali cricket talent.
Moreover, the collaboration has not only benefited the senior men’s team. Nepal’s women’s cricket team saw unprecedented success, reaching the finals of the ICC Women’s Asia Qualifier in Thailand in May 2025, thanks largely to an intensive preparatory camp organized in Delhi through Indian support. Similarly, India's role was instrumental in facilitating competitive practice matches between Nepal’s and Delhi’s U-19 teams in March 2025—part of broader support aimed at nurturing grassroots cricketing talent in Nepal.
At the individual level too, the partnership has had a transformative impact. This July, three promising young Nepali cricketers attended a month-long professional training program in Bhopal, fully supported by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. Such targeted initiatives reflect a thoughtful approach—investing directly into future generations who could potentially lead Nepal’s cricketing narrative internationally.
Institutional collaboration has also proven decisive. A decade ago, India's cricket diplomacy began modestly—with the gifting of a bus to CAN in 2013. Fast forward to October 2023, India's embassy, through the BP Koirala India-Nepal Foundation and SJVN Ltd, provided Nepal's national cricket squad with high-quality sports equipment, signaling increased dedication to boosting Nepali cricket infrastructure comprehensively.
However, while this partnership has unquestionably empowered Nepal’s cricket scene, questions linger beneath the surface. As India strategically utilizes cricket to enhance bilateral ties, observers naturally ask: what might India's deeper motivations be, and how far will Nepal’s dependence on Indian cricket support grow? Equally critical is whether Nepal's cricket governance can sustainably leverage this influx of training, equipment, and exposure, ensuring lasting independence and growth in their sporting domain.
As Nepali cricket embarks on an exciting trajectory towards international prominence, the broader implications remain to be fully understood. Is India's cricket diplomacy merely a chapter in their complex bilateral relations—or could it redefine Nepal's sports culture permanently? Only time and consistent transparency will tell.
