India's External Affairs Ministry Assures Full Support, Thorough Probe into Nepali Student's Death at KIIT

NEW DELHI/KATHMANDU – May 3, 2025 – India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed deep sadness over the tragic death of Nepali student Prisha Shah at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar and assured full cooperation and a thorough investigation into the incident. This follows the discovery of the first-year B.Tech student deceased in her hostel room on May 1, marking the second such death of a Nepali student at the university in less than three months.
In a press release dated May 2, 2025, the MEA extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family during this difficult time. The ministry stated it has been in "constant touch" with the Odisha State Government since learning about the tragic event.
Highlighting the state government's response, the MEA confirmed that the Government of Odisha has "extended full support to the family of the deceased." Crucially, the press release affirmed that "a thorough enquiry is currently being conducted by the Odisha Police" to determine the circumstances surrounding the student's death.
Reaffirming India's commitment to international students, the MEA stated, "Government of India takes the safety, security and well-being of all international students very seriously."
To ensure effective handling of the situation, the ministry emphasized ongoing coordination, stating, "We remain in close contact with the Nepali authorities, the Odisha State Government as well as KIIT management to ensure real-time communication and coordination in this matter."
This assurance comes amid heightened concern following the death of another Nepali student, Prakriti Lamsal, at the same university in February, which had led to protests and diplomatic engagement regarding student safety and university response protocols. The MEA's statement underscores the seriousness with which the Indian government is treating this latest tragedy and its commitment to ensuring a comprehensive investigation.
