Nepal–India Agreement Aims to Uplift Farmers and Strengthen Markets

Kathmandu — Nepal and India have opened a new chapter of long-term collaboration in the agricultural sector. In a formal ceremony held in Kathmandu, Nepal’s Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Ram Nath Adhikari, and India’s Minister of Agriculture, Farmers Welfare, and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on bilateral agricultural cooperation.
The MoU aims to strengthen collaboration between the two nations in key areas such as improving crop productivity, post-harvest management, agri-marketing systems, promoting climate-resilient and sustainable farming practices. The agreement reflects a shared commitment to enhancing food security, improving farmer livelihoods, and advancing environmentally sustainable agriculture.
Prior to the signing, the two ministers held a bilateral meeting to review the ongoing cooperation in the agricultural sector and discussed ways to further deepen engagement for mutual benefit. Minister Chouhan is currently in Kathmandu to participate in the 3rd BIMSTEC Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting.
The Embassy of India in Nepal stated via social media, “The MoU signed by the Hon’ble Ministers will further strengthen agricultural cooperation between India and Nepal. It reflects both countries’ shared commitment to ensuring food security, enhancing farmers’ welfare, and working toward sustainable agriculture.”
With this agreement, Nepal is expected to benefit from Indian experience, technology, and investment in modernizing its agriculture. At the same time, India stands to gain from Nepal’s unique agro-climatic conditions, production potential, and market access.
The MoU is seen as a strategic step towards transforming Nepal’s agricultural landscape and deepening bilateral ties between the two neighbors.
