Massive Corruption at Pokhara International Airport: Engineering Flaws and Public Protests
Allegations of extensive corruption and engineering flaws in the construction of Pokhara International Airport have drawn significant attention from the government and public alike. In response, Rastriya Ekata Abhiyan organized a protest today in front of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) office at Babarmahal, Kathmandu.
During the demonstration, participants demanded an investigation into financial irregularities and engineering shortcomings associated with the airport’s construction. They called for the dismissal of CAAN’s Director General, accusing him of corruption. The protest was led by Binod Singh, the Madhesh Province Coordinator of Rastriya Ekata Abhiyan, with the presence of the organization’s central chairman, Vinay Yadav, central member Chandra Yaduvanshi, and local social activists.
Engineering Flaws and International Concerns
Engineering deficiencies in Pokhara International Airport have raised serious operational and safety concerns. Issues such as cracks on the runway, inadequate water drainage systems, and unstable electrical infrastructure have hindered the airport’s functionality. These problems have been compounded by accusations of widespread corruption involving the Chinese contractor responsible for the project.
Protesters carried placards with slogans such as “Fully Operate Pokhara International Airport,” “Investigate Corruption in Airport Construction,” and “Dismiss the Corrupt Director General,” as they urged the government to act decisively.
International Financing and Diplomatic Aspects
The construction of the airport was financed through a significant loan from China, which carries a high-interest rate. Protesters demanded that the loan be converted into a grant and called on the government to initiate diplomatic efforts with China. They also urged the government to seek an official explanation from the Chinese ambassador regarding the alleged irregularities.
A Warning to the Government
Speakers at the event emphasized the urgency of addressing corruption and technical faults. “The failure to operationalize Pokhara International Airport reflects the government’s inefficiency and has tarnished the nation’s reputation while damaging its tourism sector,” said Vinay Yadav, the central chairman of Rastriya Ekata Abhiyan, during the protest.
The protesters warned of escalating their demonstrations if the government remains indifferent to their demands for immediate action.
