Qatari Investors Eye Massive Projects in Nepal: Is a Billion-Dollar Boom Coming?

Qatari investors are not just viewing Nepal as a labor destination but are also exploring investment opportunities in the country.

Qatari investors have shown interest in various sectors in Nepal, including information technology, the pharmaceutical industry, banking and financial services, hydropower, and tourism. "Investors here are actively seeking opportunities to invest in Nepal," said Khalifa bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, Chairman of the Qatar Chamber of Commerce. "We will also encourage more investors to explore these opportunities."

The discussion on expanding economic relations took place during the first high-level meeting of the Nepal-Qatar Business Council, held on Wednesday in Doha, Qatar’s capital. The meeting involved Chairman Thani, Chandraprasad Dhakal, President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), and a delegation from Nepal.

This council was established following the agreement signed between the FNCCI and the Qatar Chamber during the visit of Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to Nepal on April 23-24. During this inaugural meeting, Chairman Dhakal and Chairman Thani agreed to appoint council members under their leadership and to formalize the council soon. Dhakal also proposed organizing a Nepal-Qatar Business Conference in Nepal, which was agreed upon to be held next year.

At the meeting, Chairman Dhakal highlighted that Nepal offers a stable external environment and has recently reformed its laws to attract more investment. He urged Qatari investors to explore Nepal’s potential in hydropower, tourism, information technology, and skills development.

Additionally, Chairman Dhakal participated in the Asian Cooperation Dialogue hosted by the Qatari government, representing Nepal’s private sector.
