Details have emerged regarding an unprecedented cyberattack on Taiwanese government systems using artificial intelligence (AI). According to researchers, AI agents were deployed in the attack to conduct system reconnaissance, vulnerability identification, and various stages of cyber infiltration.

The incident reportedly occurred at the beginning of July 2026. Cybersecurity researchers state that up to eight AI agents were deployed simultaneously in the attack. The investigation notes that these agents carried out network mapping and vulnerability assessment across 21 Taiwanese government systems.

According to the investigation, the attackers managed to gain access to at least 85 user accounts and extract over 2,500 employee records. The scope of the attack reportedly extended from Taiwan's judicial government systems to nuclear safety agencies, energy companies, and government suppliers.

However, available research has not directly linked the attack to any specific Chinese group or the Chinese government. The Taiwanese government has also not publicly held China responsible for the attack.

Taiwanese officials, however, confirmed in July that their government agencies were targeted by AI-assisted cyberattacks originating from foreign sources. Affected agencies reportedly detected the attack and implemented necessary security measures.
